Edvard Grieg AS A Composer
Edvard Grieg studied music from age fifteen and learned from some of the best music teachers in Europe. Four years later, he left the Conservatory as a full-fledged musician and composer. His style of music was based on years of romantic tradition of music. In the years up to 1866, Grieg lived in Copenhagen. Niels Gade gave him advice and encouraged him to compose a symphony.
In the autumn of 1868, Grieg put the finishing touches to his first masterpiece, the Piano Concerto in A minor. In Grieg's lifetime people who heard his music gained impression that it strongly linked to the landscapes and way of life of the people around him. In the year of 1874 Edvard Grieg was awarded with an annual artist grant.
It was all thanks to Grieg a Norwegian composer and painter that a concert society with both choir and orchestra played in the capital. The masterpiece piano Concerto in A minor composed by Grieg has almost become synonymous with Norway. Grieg believed that the notes of folk music would only imperfectly improve his music.
